University of Maine

The Maine Business School

Found in 1865, the University of Maine became the first college of higher education established in the state. The success of its main campus in Orono led to the school later founding other campuses across the state, but the Orono campus is its flagship school. Also known as UMaine, the university requires that students take research courses designed to help them improve their research and writing skills. Both Washington Monthly and U.S. News and World Report ranked the University of Maine on lists of the country’s best colleges, and it has a strong reputation as one of the top schools in the state.

Master of Business Administration in Accounting

The Master of Business Administration in Accounting, also known as an MBA in Accounting, is one of the best accredited accounting degree programs in Maine and a professional program at the University of Maine built to develop set skills in all students. Students learn the importance of communications, learning more about business and accounting topics, working with others and helping their own community. The Accounting MBA consists of 18 required credit hours of core classes that cover topics like statistical analysis, financial management and management policies. They also take 12 credit hours of accounting courses that help them learn the skills needed to take professional licensing exams. All students entering the program must show that they took eight core undergraduate classes. Those who did not take those classes or similar classes will need to take each one online or on campus before entering the program. UMaine wants to ensure that students have the backgrounds necessary to take its upper level courses.

University of Southern Maine

School of Business

The University of Southern Maine can trace its roots back to a small high school and preparatory academy that once existed in Gorham. This small school later became a state normal school and later a teaching college before eventually merging with the University of Maine at Portland, which was a small community college. That merger led to the school becoming part of the UM School System and becoming a larger university with more options for students. Though the university suffered from some financial problems in recent years, it worked hard to keep its doors open and continue offering courses for students.

Master of Business Administration in Accounting

One of the top graduate programs available through the University of Southern Maine is the Master of Business Administration in Accounting. As one of the best accredited accounting degree programs in Maine, the MBA Accounting program requires that students take upper level courses through the School of Business. When designing the program, USM wanted to appeal to professional students who had experience and worked full or part time jobs. They created a program that students can easily complete on a part time basis as they take evening and weekend classes. Many of those classes meet for twice as long or longer as traditional daytime classes meet. A small number of students also earn their MBA in Accounting taking classes on a full time basis. All students must go through a detailed orientation before classes start, and they must agree to maintain a grade point average of 2.0 or higher. This is a 39 credit hour program that includes at least nine credit hours of electives.
