Distance Learning

Anchorage Community College opened on a small air force base in 1954 and offered weekend and night classes for adult students. Once Alaska became a state, it turned its community colleges into standard universities and increased the number of programs and classes available to those students. Those colleges eventually became the basis for the University of Alaska School System, which now consists of three main campuses in Anchorage, Fairbanks and Juneau. It also has a distance learning program that lets those in rural areas and students from other states graduate from a UA school. More than 35,000 students take classes from UA.

Accounting, B.B.A.

The Accounting, B.B.A. degree program offered by UA is one of the top accredited online accounting degree programs in Alaska. The program teaches students practical skills, including how to prepare and file taxes for individuals, companies and nonprofit organizations, how to predict future financial situations, how to detect financial fraud and how to investigate financial documents. Students typically complete 120 credits of classes, but some students may take as many as 30 credits of classes. UA requires that students take general education courses and some introductory finance courses in their first year. If you maintain a high grade point average, you can enroll in the full accounting program. You’ll then take classes like intermediate accounting, principles of marketing, global business environment and information systems. The University of Alaska also offers accounting electives that you can take in your later years, including corporate income tax, government and nonprofit tax, fraud examination and individual income tax.
